Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard have a new film out, set against the backdrop of World War II.
Allied is directed by the same man behind Forrest Gump and Back to the Future, and has just hit cinemas in New Zealand.
It’s 1942, and the world is at war. A husband and wife meet in Casablanca - a husband and wife to the world, but total strangers to each other. Their mission is clear; their future is not.
Their romance looks real, and soon will be, as their story moves to London and their relationship moves to marriage.
But the war rages on, and their past and their present will soon merge into one.
The twists and turns of whom to trust in love and war wind their way gently yet engagingly through this story, pleasingly ramping up the tension with a welcome old-fashioned restraint, which worked for me but might be a little slow for others.
Allied is authentically romantic and harks back to cinema of old, both obviously in look but also in the pace of the storytelling. Pitt and Cotillard have a gentle and compelling onscreen chemistry and together sell the love and the intrigue - perfect for rainy day romantics.
Three-and-a-half stars.
