A Jim Carrey impersonator fooled organisers of a film ceremony in Czech Republic into inviting him onstage during the event over the weekend.
The faker, who bears only a slight resemblance to the funnyman, appeared onstage at the Czech Lion awards, the country's Oscars, in Prague on Saturday dressed in a tuxedo. He stood on the stage, fired a confetti canon and then left.
A number of viewers noticed the incident, which aired live throughout the Czech Republic, but bosses at the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) were adamant the man onstage had been the real Dumb and Dumber star.
The CFTA have now issued a statement admitting they were fooled, which reads, "We were the victims of an elaborate hoax... We communicated with the supposed Hollywood actor's agents and he came with bodyguards and an interpreter so it all appeared very professional with nothing suggesting it was a hoax."
Carrey discovered the news on Monday and shared the report with fans on Twitter. He added, "Look! I'm more interesting than the Oscars while plunked on my couch eating chips. MY SPIRIT WILL NOT BE IGNORED!"
