Waikato’s Steve Fitter is heading to Australia to take on the country’s best Elvis impersonators after winning a national New Zealand contest.

Cambridge based Mr Fitter won the Elvis Down Under competition in Upper Hutt on Saturday night and is taking his talent to Port Macquarie, New South Wales to compete at the Wintersun Festival next month.

Mr Fitter says he has been an Elvis fan for years.

“I’ve liked his music for a long time but have only been entering the competitions for about a year,” says Mr Fitter.

“Once you get into the songs, a lot of them have a message and I just love singing them.”

Mr Fitter sang three Elvis Presley songs at Saturday’s contest, ‘If I Can Dream’, ‘Kentucky Rain’ and ‘Polk Salad Annie’.

“It was great, the crowd was fantastic and really got behind me,” says Mr Fitter.

“Fortunately I picked the right songs and when I finished the last one the noise from the crowd was deafening.”

Mr Fitter won a cash prize of $1500 for coming first in the New Zealand competition.

The winner of Australia’s Wintersun festival Elvis event will go on to compete against 25 other contestants at the fifth annual international 2011 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in Memphis, Tennessee on August 11.
