Gravity defying dance-moves, kissing a female crowd member and crying on stage -- Madonna’s first New Zealand show was one fans won’t be forgetting in a hurry.
The pop icon arrived in the country earlier this week as part of her Rebel Heart tour, for her first performance at Auckland’s Vector Arena last night.
Fans were left waiting until just after 10 o’clock before she opened her show with 'Iconic', descending from the ceiling in a steel cage.
Surrounded by religious iconography, Madge reminded the crowd of who she was with 'Bitch I’m Madonna', making her way across the stage before telling the crowd: “I have never been here before so let’s make it hot.”
It was a show complete with all Madonna’s trademark controversy and she made sure nothing was left out, including half-naked nuns and pole dancing as she sung her way through 'Holy Water'.
Later in the night two crowd members were invited on stage: a security guard named Shane and a New Zealand female fan named Shaki.
The crowd watched as Madonna performed a sex act on a banana, then proceeded to kiss Shaki as Shane watched on.
The performance continued as the crowd was treated to her past hits, with a remix of 'Vogue', continuing the night’s trend of mixing the old with the new.
Fans stood up and sung along as a dubstep version of 'Like a Virgin' was performed on a rising platform and cheered as she kicked her way through 'Music' and 'Material Girl'.
Madonna changed the tune of the night as she slowed it down for an acoustic version of 'La Vie en Rose'. Dedicating the song to her son she told the crowd how strong a mother’s love is as she cried on stage.
The show was a theatrical spectacle with a group of talented dancers keeping the crowd wowed.
The night ended with 'Holiday' and Madonna telling the crowd: “I’ve been doing this for 33 years, I can do whatever I want.”
