Police warn Pokémon trainers to stay away

Amidst all the excitement of Pokémon Go, an Australian police station has become an unwitting target for aspiring trainers.

The Darwin Police Station has been marked off as a Pokéstop in the new app - a spot that players should head to in order to get free items.

But officers aren't impressed by the player's enthusiasm.

"For those budding Pokémon Trainers out there using Pokémon Go - whilst the Darwin Police Station may feature as a Pokéstop, please be advised that you don't actually have to step inside in order to gain the pokéballs," the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services posted on Facebook.

They also reiterate the warning message that displays when the game loads - always be aware of your surroundings, and to look up from your phone and check both ways when crossing the road.

"That Sandshrew isn't going anywhere fast. Stay safe and catch 'em all!"

Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game where players can catch Pokémon on their mobile device and team up to battle and conquer gyms.

Pokéstops are locations marked off in the game based around landmarks in the real world, such as murals, parks and historic spots - and apparently, police stations.
