Shailene Woodley, star of Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars, has broadcast live on Facebook her own arrest during a protest.

The 24-year-old was part of a demonstration at the Dakota Access Pipeline at North Dakota's Standing Rock Reservation.

If constructed, the pipeline would run across the Missouri River and transport crude oil to Illinois, putting the river at risk of contamination and threatening the nearby reservation's Native American community.

Woodley's Facebook Live video lasted for over two hours, before her mother took the phone from her to record her being arrested.

"Record this. Don't stop," Woodley says.

"They grabbed me by my jacket and said that I wasn't allowed to continue. They have giant guns and batons and zip ties and they're not letting me go."

The actress believes she was singled out by law enforcement because of her recognisability.

"Why am I being arrested and no one else is who was down there? Is it because I'm famous?" she asks her arresting officer, who tells her it's because she "trespassed".

"Yeah, but so did hundreds of people, we were all down there. When you asked us to leave, we did," she replies.

Woodley was arrested for two misdemeanours, including engaging in a riot, reports TMZ.
