Angry fans have taken to social media after watching new comic book film Suicide Squad, either shocked and disappointed at critical reviews, or distraught and outraged over Warner Bros defilement of their favourite characters.

Suicide Squad, released in NZ cinemas on Thursday, follows the assembly of a team of DC anti-heroes, who are recruited for a black ops mission to save the world.

The movie has been lashed by reviewers, with Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair calling it "too shoddy and forgettable to even register as revolting".

The reaction on Twitter has been similar.

On review site Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 31%, based on 115 reviews, with an average rating of 4.9/10.

However, fans have launched a petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes, with their leader telling Reuters he felt "there is some kind of pattern for movie critics to give DC Extended Universe movies bad reviews".

Despite gaining 17,616 supporters, the petition was quickly mocked on Twitter.

"I find it kind of interesting the petition kicks off with thousands of fans signing it before they even get a chance to form an opinion by seeing it for themselves," says Newshub entertainment reporter Kate Rodger.

"Hating on critics is fun, I have no issue with that - animated discourse between people with a differing stance on a movie is one of the great things about movies!  But hate on critics with an actual opinion of your own, based on actually seeing the film in question.

"And for what it's worth, my opinion?  No, it's not a great film.  Excellent characters well cast, a cracking first half-hour with a killer soundtrack, then the ill-conceived story descends into a loud muddled unfortunate mess."
