A Melbourne home featured in cult comedy The Castle has had its bid to be protected by a permanent heritage order rejected.
The owner of the house wants to demolish it and build townhouses in its place, but experts argued the building should be heritage-listed because of its social and historical significance - saying it's not a house, it's a home.
The Moonee Valley City Council voted on Tuesday night against pursuing a heritage protection application for the property, which is located at 3 Dagonet Street in Strathmore.
"An important debate went on, but we have to remember this is a private person's property," said Mayor Andrea Suraco.
"And the significant heritage or sentimental side is from the movie - and the house was supposed to be in Coolaroo - no one would have known it was in Strathmore."
Mayor Suraco said the decision didn't necessarily mean the house would be demolished, as it could be moved from the property to another area.
