Trailer released for ethereal new Pixar film Coco

A new animated movie predicted by many to be Mexico's answer to Moana will be hitting cinemas later this year - and it's one of two movies released by Pixar in 2017.

Coco has been somewhat of an enigma since it was announced, with Pixar fans so far only being able to see a handful of production stills - but the new trailer has removed some of the mystery.

The trailer tells some of the story of young Mexican boy Miguel, who adores deceased musician Ernesto de la Cruz to the extent that he watches old tapes of his and lights a candle for him on a mantelpiece.

As he sits and watches the videos of his musical idol, he attempts to emulate de la Cruz's musicianship on his own weather-beaten guitar - and then, after listening to some stirring narration from the video telling him to follow his dreams, he gets up and leaves his home.

Where he's heading is de la Cruz's grave, where he is buried beneath his iconic guitar - but when Miguel strums his late hero's instrument, he's transported into the Land of the Dead.

While the land is technically full of lifeless people, it is actually a vibrant and beautiful place that looks to have been established as the core setting for the film.

Coco, which is one of two movies to be released in 2017 alongside Cars 3, is expected to borrow strongly from Mexican culture much in the same way Moana borrowed from Polynesia.
