Sam Neill is set to star in an upcoming historical action-drama following a surgeon during World War II.

The Guinea Pig Club starts filming in New Zealand in early 2018, to be directed by Kiwi Roger Donaldson (The World’s Fastest Indian) and a script written by Mike Riddell (The Insatiable Moon).

It's the true story of maverick Kiwi surgeon Archie McIndoe (to be played by Aussie actor Richard E Grant) who formed The Guinea Pig Club during World War II, developing new plastic surgery techniques for treating pilots badly burned in combat and helping ease them back into normal life.

The film will also be starring Jeremy Irvine and the executive producer is Penny Wolf, with Tim Sanders producing for Kiwi company Field Theory.

Sales agents Radiant Films International plan to launch international sales of the film at this month's Cannes Market.

"The Guinea Pig Club is an uplifting and heroic story, coupled with moments of humour to deliver a thoroughly entertaining experience," Radiant's Mimi Steinbauer said.

Neill's next appearance on the big screen is in Marvel and Disney blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok, directed by fellow Kiwi Taika Waititi.
