Ouch, last night's The Bachelor NZ was brutal. The Bach man Zac eliminated bachelorette Bel Clarke, who left in a teary state of dejection. We knew the cull had been coming, we just didn't know it would be this brutal! A group date snapped into a mini rose ceremony elimination and suddenly Bel was in a boat back home.
It was a cruel blow, especially as the turbulent Bel often wore the "girl most likely to have an imminent break down" hat and could have been dealt a softer exit. But this is the way the conveniently placed Tim Tam cookie crumbles. She's ok about it now, saying she's "feeling good" despite being given the boot. She wasn't generally surprised to go home, "If it's not there, it's not there and I don't think we were there yet."
She did sum up her relationship with Zac with a neutral, "I think we hit it off at the beginning but then we fizzled out." But when asked "will you miss him?" her "no!" was a shade too quick...Hmmm. Perhaps the dust isn't quite settled. She certainly has been emotional at rose ceremonies, having a now notorious breakdown on Sunday night. Her outburst, where she took Zac off mid ceremony to say she didn't know if she could go on, earned her flack from fellow Bachelorettes. But she doesn't regret that it happened. "I just panicked, the pressure just hit me and it came out….But it wasn't staged...it needed to be said."
The other purge was of Vanessa Bingham, the late bloomer of the show who waited until last the last moment to show us that she's actually goddam hilarious. It was yet another prick for our consciences, as we had been not so quietly nursing the suspicion she was a huge bitch. And in real life, as in her final episode on screen, she turns out to be rather awesome. She also denies she peaked too late, saying, "I think when I first got in there were so many girls….I didn't want to be rude and interrupt."
So again we can confirm Zac loves two things: sending home interesting girls and those who actually know how to dye their hair properly. Vanessa herself isn't heartbroken to be going home, in fact it sounds like a little bit of a relief from the tedium. "I was getting bored. My first date with him was so long ago….Claudia was getting a lot of one on one time with him after the group dates." The lack of available time meant she never got to really get to know Zac. "It was frustrating I never got the time to know him and show him who I was."
Both girls seem fairly recovered from rejection. They're already looking to the future. Vanessa is planning to buy another house and Bel wants another cat.
