Lorde has apologised and says she "f**ked up" by referring to her friendship with Taylor Swift as being like hanging out with someone with an 'autoimmune disease'.
In an interview with The Guardian, Lorde said being friends with the 'Bad Blood' hitmaker was like "having a friend with very specific allergies".
"There are certain places you can't go together certain things you can't do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It's like having a friend with an autoimmune disease," the 20-year-old Kiwi songstress quipped.
Her comments drew significant backlash online, with one Twitter user writing, "I wonder how Selena Gomez feels about this. What an incredibly ignorant analogy to make, Lorde."
The observation appears to be in reference to Gomez's suffering lupus, an autoimmune disease.
"Didn't mention Taylor, but regardless, I f**ked up and that was really insensitive. I'm sorry," Lorde wrote in a reply tweet.
Her apology sparked serious debate in the subsequent Twitter thread, with some backing her up, and others clearly not satisfied with the apology.
