Nintendo has announced the release of a throwback console that will have fans on the edge of their seats.

The Japanese gaming giant's new Super Nintendo Entertainment System will go on sale in September, promising to bring some of Nintendo's most beloved classic games back to life.

According to CBS, last year's release of Nintendo's NES Classic gaming console was one of 2016's most sort-after gifts.

The latest console will come with 21 games including The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Star Fox 2.

"The SNES is shorthand for Super Nintendo, which was Nintendo's console in the early 90s," Gamespot.com senior editor Peter Brown told CBS.

"[The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past] was a game in production for a long time, and it never ended up being released in an official capacity. There have been versions of it floating around online, but this is the first time Nintendo's putting their stamp on it and actually shipping it to customers."

The blast from the past console is expected to be more widely available this time around and is expected to cost NZD$110.
