Women of Wonder Woman out to 'show the world wrong'

With a female superhero leading the charge on screen and a female superhero in charge from the director's chair, this Wonder Woman has been 75 years in the making.

There is nobody more stoked with the glowing Wonder Woman reviews than Gal Godot herself.

"I'm so happy, knowing how all of us gave it our everything," she tells Newshub.

"Patty was working on this movie for two years; I was working on this movie for a year, and we cared so much about the film and the character. We're just happy that people really get it and enjoy it.

"I couldn't be more grateful."

Director Patty Jenkins is the other wonder woman behind the camera, and says this dawn of a new day has been a long time coming for her too.

"It's been 10, 11 years since I started saying, 'Oh I would like to make Wonder Woman; nobody's made Wonder Woman,'" she said.

Jenkins says she's had female audiences actually in tears during some scenes.

"I did not expect that, even though it was awesome for me to see. I didn't expect there was a craving... It's so wonderful."

But for feisty filmmaker Jenkins, this isn't just a superhero movie; it's a message to Hollywood.

"I do feel the 'nobody thought she could succeed', and now I think 'let's show the world wrong, let's show the world that's not true' - you were wrong about Wonder Woman, maybe you were wrong about women leading a film."

Gladiator star Connie Nielson plays Wonder Woman's mother, Queen Hippolyta, in the film, and says she had the time of her life.

"There's a part of me which just loved all the physicality of it," she says.

"It was exciting to be riding down the beach with my pals, my sisters-in-arms, riding into battle, jumping off horses, grabbing your sword and starting to kill Germans. Sorry Germans!"
