Anyone who thinks the power of cinema has waned in the age of the internet should go and see Dunkirk at IMAX.
Christopher Nolan's latest film is the most immersive war film ever made, putting you on the beaches of Dunkerque, on the waves of the English Channel and in the Spitfires above it for one of World War II's most renowned early battles.
The technical proficiency and huge budget put into this pay off with extraordinary results that must be experienced to be believed.
Dunkirk is certainly not the greatest war film ever made, nor is it the greatest film of 2017, as some critics are gushing. As powerful an experience as it is, it tells the story visually and aurally rather than with characters of depth.
As amazing as the experience is, if satisfying character arcs or a detailed narrative are what you're after, this isn't where you'll find it.
Also, the Hans Zimmer score is so intense and relentless that it sometimes overpowers everything else and after a while, the relentlessness detracts from the impact somewhat.
The qualms I have about the film are very minor, however, and should not take away from the fact that Dunkirk at IMAX is a truly incredible experience that should not be missed.
Four-and-a-half stars.
