US President Donald Trump is being widely condemned over his latest move, being told he's "on notice" and "cowardly".
The former Celebrity Apprentice host announced via Twitter that transgender people won't be accepted or allowed to serve "in any capacity" in the military, due to the financial costs and "disruption" he believes they cause.
George Takei, of Star Trek fame, pulled no punches with a quick flurry of replies.
"With your ban on trans people from the military, you are on notice that you just pissed off the wrong community. You will regret it," he said.
"History shall record that you are not only the stupidest, most incompetent president ever, but also the cruellest and pettiest."
Pop star Lady Gaga says the ruling is directly furthering the endangerment of a community that is already vulnerable.
"The message you have just sent has endangered the lives of people all over the United States and overseas bravely serving our nation," said the 'Poker Face' hitmaker.
"Sincerely, did you know of the group you singled out today, 45 percent of them (aged 18 to 24) have attempted suicide already?"
Military veterans labelled Mr Trump a coward for banning soldiers from serving after having never served himself.
Among other celebrities calling out the anti-transgender rule include Caitlyn Jenner - who voted for Mr Trump - Charlize Theron, Ellen DeGeneres, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Stephen King and Mia Farrow.
