Game of Thrones return sees anti-feminist, anti-liberal arguments rage

Days away from the premiere of the seventh season of HBO's hit fantasy show Game of Thrones, heated political arguments are raging online.

Emilia Clarke, one of the show's stars, has branded those who criticise her nude scenes as 'anti-feminist', while a conservative US pundit is copping flak for waxing lyrical about why 'liberals' enjoy the show - which isn't the reason they think they like it.

It's strange for a TV show that prominently features zombies, dragons and magical spells to inspire heated debate about the politics on Planet Earth, but alas, this realm is currently in the age of the internet where such madness reigns.

The adult show has often faced criticism for its graphic violence and frequent nudity, including many scenes featuring Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen.

"I get a lot of crap for having done nudes scenes and sex scenes," Clarke told Elle.

"That, in itself, is so anti-feminist. Women hating on other women is just the problem."

In the same interview, Clarke explained how empowering her nakedness was for her, and that she'd thanked the show's producers for giving her character such powerful scenes.

Meanwhile, conservative New York Times columnist Ross Douthat has publicly stated that people he labels "liberals" don't understand why they like the show, with the real reason being "they want a king or queen", or something.

Game of Thrones returns to New Zealand screens on Monday, July 17.
