The actor portrays the Incredible Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has a central role in the latest movie, which is directed by New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi.
Ruffalo was broadcasting on Instagram live as the premiere kicked off at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, pointing his phone at the audience as he walked on stage - but then forgot to turn it off before putting it in his pocket.
Fortunately for Marvel - and Ruffalo - the roughly 2500 people who tuned in couldn't see the film, but could hear it and began commenting over how long it would take before he ended the broadcast.
About ten minutes into the film, the broadcast ended - but not before Ruffalo gave one last sheepish grin to those watching.
Thor: Ragnarok opens in New Zealand cinemas later this month.
