The first reactions to Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok have hit social media and so far they're overwhelmingly positive, with the Kiwi filmmaker himself earning much of the praise.
It's the first major Hollywood film from the Hunt for the Wilderpeople writer/director and among the tweets about it are international critics overjoyed that Marvel allowed it to be "Waititi-ish as hell".
Waititi's humour is singled out for a lot of the praise, although the performances from cast members Tessa Thompson and Jeff Goldblum also scored admiration, as did the score.
American website Indiewire calls Waititi as 'the saviour of the Thor franchise'.
"The indie filmmaker favourite has finally made the Thor movie every fan has been craving for since the character debuted in 2011," writes Zack Sharf.
Thor: Ragnarok opens in New Zealand cinemas on October 26.
