Thor: Ragnarok premiere leaves Taika Waititi overwhelmed

Stars Cate Blanchett and Chris Hemsworth have praised Kiwi director Taika Waititi at the world premiere of his first Hollywood film, Thor.

The actors, who both star in the film, say fans can expect to see a lot of Waititi's unique humour.

After more than a year of filming, the red carpet was rolled out on Wednesday (NZ time) for the big reveal - leaving Waititi a bit overwhelmed.

"I'd actually pushed it to the back of my mind and forgot that this might be a part of finishing a movie," he said.

While it's his first major Hollywood film, fans can expect his unique style to come through in the third instalment of the Thor franchise.

"I wanted to respect what the first two films had done, but also use that as a bit of a launching pad to try and do something very fresh and very authentic to me," he said.

Hemsworth said he was jaded after filming the last Thor, but was inspired at the prospect of working alongside Waititi.

"Taika came on board and we knew each other prior to this partnership and both said, 'Yeah, there's a lot more to explore that we haven't yet', so every day was about doing something different and taking risks," he said.

And that's what drew Blanchett to the project too.

"Taika's an utterly unique beast," she said.

"I think for all of us, [the best part] was to be part of Taika's take on the whole thing, because it's kind of a Thor reboot extraordinaire."

Despite being an action blockbuster, Hemsworth said the audience will also enjoy a few laughs.

"It's just a greater sense of humour to the whole world and universe that we embark on in this film."

First reactions have been glowing, with critics highlighting Waititi's humour and the performances of Tessa Thompson and Jeff Goldblum.

It opens in New Zealand cinemas on October 26.
