Taika Waititi's first superhero movie has thundered to US$121 million (NZ$175 million) across its opening weekend in North American, as well as breaking records in Asia.
Thor: Ragnarok's total worldwide gross box-office revenue now sits at NZ$618 million, as the Boy filmmaker rockets towards becoming the second Kiwi to helm a film that pulls in over US$1 billion.
Sir Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey both surpassed the milestone.

Waititi's Thor film also opened to an estimated NZ$80.4 million in China and NZ$7.5 million in India, the largest ever for a November release in each territory, according to Box Office Mojo.
The North American opening weekend is the fourth best of 2017, behind Beauty and the Beast (US$175 million), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (US$147 million) and It (US$123 million).
Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig's directorial debut Lady Bird opened in just four theatres in North America, but pulled in the best per-theatre average of the year so far, with US$93,903.
