Golden Globe snubs - women, minorities shut out of Best Director race

Nominations for the 75th annual Golden Globes were announced on Tuesday morning and as always, with them came several snubs and surprises.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which runs the awards and decides the nominees, is facing backlash over the lack of diversity in the Best Director race in particular.

Strong women and people of colour contenders snubbed in the category include Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Jordan Peele (Get Out), Dee Rees (Mudbound) and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman).

The lack of inclusion in this year's Best Director race has resulted in outrage on social media, with many in the film community especially shocked at Gerwig and Peele's omissions.

Peele's exclusion from the Best Screenplay nominees for Get Out has also been called out, as has other snubs including The Big Sick, The Good Place, Twin Peaks and The Young Pope.

Veep being snubbed is also being labelled a surprise after its Emmy success, while celebrated films Detroit and Wind River also received no love from the HPFA.

The 2018 Golden Globe winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on January 7 (local time).
