On the red carpet for the American Idol finals, the 'Firework' singer was asked what she thought of Meghan Markle's wedding dress from the royal wedding.
"I would have done one more fitting," Katy said of the Givenchy gown. "I'm never not going to tell the truth! One more fitting, but I love you."
The singer's American Idol co-star Lionel Richie appeared shocked at her reply before attempting to intervene.
Katy interrupted, adding: "Kate won!" drawing a comparison to Kate Middleton's dress from her 2011 wedding to Prince William.
Earlier in the interview, Katy had praised Meghan's stance as a "proud feminist", saying: "I support her as another woman, and love her."
The pop star's quip has sparked a tirade of criticism on Twitter.
"God I hate @katyperry and her faux-feminism. She says "Kate won" in regards to Meghan Markle's wedding dress," one commentator wrote.
"Seeing arseholes like Katy Perry having a go at Meghan Markle because her dress wasn't skin tight is so frustrating," read another.
Some fans pointed out that Katy Perry might not be the most qualified person when it comes to giving out fashion advice.
"This woman wore squirting cupcakes over her breasts. Should we take her opinion that seriously?"
