Boat Safety Week: On the water with Kiwi fishing duo

It's Boat Safety Week and Story reeled in a couple of TV Fishing Hosts to find out how to keep safe in the water this summer.

Milan Radonich and Nathan O'Hearn know a lot about having fun without pushing the boat out so far that it sinks and they've seen it all.

But it's boat safety week for a serious reason. On average, 23 Kiwi boaties die each year and they are almost all men aged between 30 and 60 years and using boats up to six metres long.

Two-thirds of recreational boating fatalities would be avoided if people wore their lifejackets.

"We're a fish out of water in water if you know what I mean. It's too easy to get in trouble. There's no reason you can't have them on. It's comfortable. It's easy," says Mr O'Hearn.

Mr O'Hearn is also big on personal responsibility to make sure you are safe and not to rely on the skipper to provide you with a life jacket.

The fishing duo have teamed up with Maritime New Zealand this year to make simple checklist videos to keep you and your friends safe this summer.
