The Government has raised the speed limit to 110km/h - but don't put your foot to the floor just yet.
The new speed limit won't apply to all open roads - just a select few.
To be eligible for the higher speed limit, roads must have at least two lanes going each way and a median barrier. It also must not have access to any neighbouring properties.
Associate Transport Minister Craig Foss announced the change as part of the Speed Management Guide.
"New Zealand's road toll is much, much too high. The Guide, developed as part of the Government's Safer Journeys road safety strategy, is about ensuring all road authorities are making sound, evidence-based decisions with an emphasis on safety," he said.
Along with the potential increase to speed limits, Mr Foss says changes could also include lowering speed limits and making changes to the design of some roads.
"New Zealand roads are unique and conditions vary from towns to cities, north to south," he said.
"The Guide strongly encourages community involvement as local knowledge and perspectives, backed by the information and data provided in the Guide, will help ensure the best possible safety results."
