Developer offers 'free house' in Auckland, but there's a catch

An Auckland property developer's making his small contribution to the Auckland housing shortage by offering up a property to those with land, but no roof over their heads.

The Trade Me listing, which went up in February, lists the three-bedroom, one-bathroom house in Onehunga as up for grabs.

Developer Dave Rennie said he wished to donate the house to the "homeless of Auckland", in the midst of a critical housing crisis.

Mr Rennie said the property was one of 16 rental properties he owned, and it had been out of action for a while.

"It seemed like a waste and it was a shame for it not to be utilised," he told Newshub.

"It might be a good starting point for somebody."

He believed the native timber floored home had "great bones and would make a great project".

But if the offer seems too good to be true, there are a few big caveats.

The new owner needs to have the land for the house to be moved on to, and a spare $24,000 for it to be re-located by a house moving company.

Mr Rennie is urging Auckland Council and charity organisations to get behind this project, to get a family into the home.

He believes the "whole housing process is too complicated", and is being stifled by bureaucracy.  He says this is his way of simplifying the process.

Around four parties were currently interested, Mr Rennie said, but so far nobody had snapped up the offer.

"It's first in best dressed," he said.
