A prison guard was stabbed by a group of inmates at Auckland Prison, Paremoremo, on Saturday afternoon, Newshub has learned.
The guard was wearing a stab-resistant vest at the time of the attack, which took place around 3pm.
It's believed three inmates were involved in the attack, which is believed to be gang-related. Corrections said they used "improvised weapons".
The guard was taken to hospital for treatment, and released soon after. The inmates were also admitted, two returning to jail Saturday night.
Corrections Association president Alan Whitley says officers need easier access to pepper-spray in the prison's wings.
Sprays are available, but it isn't easy for guards to get their hands on it quickly.
