Dairy Flat crash: Boy-racer tribute to young men killed

Hundreds of friends, family and members of the boy-racing community have on Saturday paid tribute to two young men killed in a horror crash last weekend.

Ricky Barker, 18, and Andre Ahman, 20, were killed when their car struck another vehicle on the Dairy Flat Highway, north Auckland.

On Saturday they were remembered with a tribute drive to the crash scene.

Around 200 of those who knew them donned red, Mr Barker's favourite colour, and drove in a convoy to Auckland's waterfront and back.

Mr Barker's mother, Kaye Barker, said she was overwhelmed by how many people came to pay their respects.

"I'm just so proud that my son's touched so many hearts."

While it was Mr Barker's family who organised the event, Ms Barker said it was important to them his friend, Mr Ahman, was also honoured.

"His family and his friends lost a child the same as we did."

The convoy drove to the crash site at a makeshift memorial, where the pair's ride ended.

Police have been concerned all week for the safety of mourners who have been stopping there on a dangerous highway to pay their respects at the crash site. That's why on Saturday they urged those taking part in the ride-along not to stop, but instead to drive past slowly and safely.

Some ignored those safety warnings, taking a chance to say goodbye.

Mr Barker's pride and joy, his Nissan Skyline, was brought along for the ride too. It's now covered in tributes from those who knew him best.

"We have just been lost for words watching it," Ms Barker said. "We've had the house open for everybody to come. We've all supported each other and to see that we'll have that forever."

With the help of a Givealittle page, Mr Barker's family now hope to achieve his biggest dream of fixing up the car that he'd put so much of his life into.
