Lawyers for Teina Pora are heading back to court today to argue he deserves more compensation.
They're fighting for a judicial review after he wrongly spent more than two decades in jail. They say his $2.5 million payout is around $500,000 short of what he deserves.
They claim the Crown did not allow for inflation in his compensation package, despite a recommendation that it should by the justice overseeing the case.
Prime Minister Bill English says while he accepts Mr Pora suffered a "serious injustice", he wouldn't comment on his court action.
"In our view, we applied the guidelines. He's quite free to go off to the court to contest that," Mr English told The AM Show on Monday.
"Teina Pora deserves significant compensation, and this is an argument over just what exactly that amount should be."
Mr Pora, now 41, spent 21 years behind bars after he was wrongly convicted of the 1992 rape and murder of Susan Burdett.
