A 48-year-old woman has died after a medical event at the Christchurch central police cells.
Officers reportedly went to wake the woman for breakfast around 6am on Friday and found she was unresponsive.
District Commander Superintendent John Price has expressed his sympathies.
"Our staff started doing CPR and then an ambulance was called, but unfortunately she wasn't able to be revived," he told Fairfax. "Our thoughts go out to the family at this sad time."
Police haven't named her cause of death, but the case isn't being treated as suspicious.
The death has been referred to the coroner and the Independent Police Conduct Authority for further investigation.
