A fire that broke out in the roof of a classroom at an Auckland school on Wednesday evening has been brought under control.

About 16 firefighters and four fire appliances battled the blaze at Mount Albert Grammar School on Alberton Ave.

A fire service spokesperson told Newshub it broke out in a ceiling void of a classroom.

School representatives have been contacted, so they can assess the damage.

The first firefighters on the scene described it as a small property fire.
