A strong quake shook the capital early on Monday morning, waking up Wellingtonians earlier than most would have liked on a Monday morning.
It hit at 2:31am, measuring 4.2, centred 15km northwest of the city. It was 31km deep.
"Why u wake me up earf?" one Twitter user wrote.
"I was outside during the #eqnz just now, and could hear the earth rumble towards me through the valley. Amazing," said another.
"Felt like a giant stomped once very quickly," one person noted.
More than 2100 people reported feeling it to the GeoNet website.
