A police chase has ended badly for group of suspected car thieves in Auckland, with one of the culprits suffering injuries when she was run over.
The pursuit began late Monday morning, when Counties-Manukau police found a stolen car and began to follow.
When the car took to the Southern Motorway, heading north, the police Eagle helicopter joined in.
Exiting at Greenlane, the vehicle continued to drive dangerously and fast through the streets around One Three Hill, and was eventually spiked in Wheturangi Rd.
"The driver continued and eventually hit the back of a stationary truck," said Senior Sergeant John Yearbury. "There were five occupants in the vehicle, all got out and some ran.
"Unfortunately, one of the females in the back seat was run over by the vehicle, I think, as it was rolling backwards.
"It ran over her foot, damaging her ankle. I'm not sure of the extent of the injuries, but she was in a bit of pain."
The driver and other passengers, aged between 12 and 19, were chased down and caught.
