80,000 flood into Queenstown and Wanaka for New Years

More than 80,000 people are flooding into Queenstown and Wanaka to kick off the New Year.

The region's population is usually around 37,000 people, but has swelled to more than 120,000.

The annual Rhythm and Alps festival in Wanaka's Cardrona Valley is drawing in 10,000 people.

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult says it's the busiest time of the year.

"New Years is always a party and we're known for good parties down here.

"We expect people to have some really good ones but please don't overdo it. Don't leave yourself inebriated and embarrassed and don't leave a mess for our people to clean up the next morning."

Mr Boult says he takes his hat off to the emergency services working around the clock to keep people safe, especially on the roads.

"There are lots of the people on the road and it does take time to get places.

"Please be patient. Lots of people aren't familiar with our roads and sometimes don't quite know where they're going to please give them some space."
