One person is dead after a drowning at Auckland's Muriwai Beach on Friday afternoon.
Surf lifesaving duty officer Duncan Buchanan says they sent a boat out after a report of a missing person believed to be in distress.
The Westpac Helicopter Rescue was called out, but by the time it arrived, the person had died.
"Lifeguards located a person and returned them to shore, and at which point we handed over to other on-scene emergency services," he says.
Meanwhile, a woman is in a critical condition, after being pulled from the water in Auckland Harbour, near Quay Street.
Members of the public pulled her onto a boat about 4pm. She was given CPR, before being taken to hospital.
