Napier City Council is warning that water is at "critically low levels" after a warm weekend.
The council is implementing a level-four restriction, which means that residents should not use sprinklers or hoses for at least the next few days until water levels are stabilised.
In a media release the council said there had been "extremely heavy water use over the hot weekend".
Water consumption lifts by up to 70 percent in the summer months, but the supply in Napier is already under pressure.
Council gardener Shelley Exeter said: "We're asking our communities to lower their usage in easy, clever ways, reusing the water from rinsing fruit and veg on your garden, putting a cover on the pool, if you have one, that kind of thing. Indoors, it's about turning off the tap when brushing teeth and shorter showers."
The council said it would review the water restriction later in the week.
