A former SkyCity poker champion has been arrested on several charges related to methamphetamine.
NZME reports Shane Thompson, known as Shane Tamihana in poker circles, was allegedly a part of one of the biggest drug rings in Hawke's Bay.
Following the conclusion of a six-month-long investigation he faces 14 counts of supplying methamphetamine, and five counts of both possession and conspiring to deal the drug.
Thirteen other people were arrested, including Thompson's partner, following the investigation. Police also seized 3kg of methamphetamine, more than 200 tabs of LSD, eight firearms, $343,000 in cash, six late model cars and a Harley Davidson motorbike.
Thompson and his partner will appear in the Napier District Court in February for a case review hearing.
He faces life in prison of found guilty.
Prior to his arrest Thompson was a prominent poker player known for his aggressive style and signature move where he would exclaim "Later Bo" as he forced opponents to fold due to the strength of his betting.
SkyCity, where Thompson competed in several poker tournaments, refused to comment to NZME about the about the case or the Thompson's history at the casino.
