New Zealand Twitter opens its Secret Santa presents

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has revealed what she got from her #nzsecretsanta.

She was given a "beautiful" Christmas ornament as part of New Zealand Post's Twitter Secret Santa.

"It's my first Christmas decoration," she said. "I've actually put up a tree and there's no decorations on it.

"Thank you to whoever sent this to me, I really appreciate it, it's very, very kind," she said.

Ms Ardern said she'll put it at the top of the tree.

Ms Ardern will be getting two gifts this year, her original Secret Santa's gift is still on its way and today she recieved one from a super Secret Santa.

Since the end of November, Twitter has been alight with the hashtag #nzsecretsanta.

But Tuesday is the day when the 3623 Secret Santas of New Zealand start to receive their gifts.

Productivity in NZ grinds to a halt, as #nzsecretsanta players continue to check the letterbox and refresh their Twitter feed.

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester was happy with his gift - a book and a cross-stitch pattern - reminding him to plan ahead.

Scientist Siouxsie Wiles got a handmade calendar, featuring Lego designs that she and her daughter had made together.

There were tears, laughter and lots of surprises, including from one Twitter user, who was given an iPad from Chorus.

Another said they "squealed", when they opened their present to see a toy panda and a donation to the World Wildlife Fund to "adopt a panda".

One lucky Kiwi was sent a small scale model of a whare, ready for them to paint and decorate with tukutuku panels.

Here are some of the highlights from those who've opened their presents:
