Four people have died in separate crashes across New Zealand overnight in a horror period for our road toll.

There were fatal crashes across the country from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The road toll was already at 363 when it was last updated, and will increase as victims are added.

The first crash was at around 10:15pm near Oropi, after a car smashed into a tree on Pyes Pa Rd between Williams Rd and Taumata Rd. The driver died at the scene.

Another person died in a single-vehicle crash in rural Otago at about 11pm. It appears to have left the road and crashed into a paddock on Kempthorne Rd near Tapanui, police say.

A second man died in Otago early on Wednesday morning after a single-vehicle crash on coastal Waianakarua Rd, east of Herbert, at about 1:50am.

The vehicle hit a bridge between Herbert-Hampden and Woodburn Rds, police say.

In the Waikato, one man died after being trapped following a serious crash between a logging truck and car near Lake Karapiro.

The crash happened on State Highway 29 near the intersection of SH1, at about 5am on Wednesday.

Police are also responding to a truck crash on SH4 between Tohunga Rd and Middle Rd, 9km north of Raetihi.

Police say the truck collided with a bank, leaving the driver trapped in a serious to moderate condition.

A helicopter has been requested and a large-vehicle tow has been called.

A motorcyclist has also been left in a critical condition after his bike and a car collided in Hamilton.
