A large New Year's Eve fireworks display on Auckland's Waiheke Island has been cancelled after being labelled "too dangerous."
Waiheke's Cable Bay vineyard had originally been granted a permit by WorkSafe to hold a pyrotechnics show, which was granted on the condition that any fire risks would be manageable, according to Fairfax.
The vineyard had been planning to charge between $159-169 for tickets, which would include a multi-course meal and a live DJ.
But with the island currently battling water shortages, not everyone wanted to display to go ahead.
Local resident Lindsay Niemann spent much of the week trying to alert authorities to the dangers she perceived of allowing a land-based fireworks display to go ahead.
"There's no water on Waiheke, so if it does go wrong they're not going to be able to get any water," she told NZME.
Her concerns were heightened due to an "exceptionally dry December" which had resulted in "no water on Waiheke".
The fireworks have now been scrapped due to the "tinder dry" grass and strong winds throughout the day, principal rural fire officer Thomas Harrie said.
He said it would be "too dangerous" and urged private homeowners not to set off their own fireworks.
For those still looking to catch a fireworks display in Auckland, the Sky Tower is set to let off 3000 fireworks at midnight, which will last for over five minutes.
