Will KidsCan's funding be canned by the Government?

Children's charity KidsCan could have its Government funding scrapped next year, causing it to scale back its operations.

The charity told Newshub it would have to limit the number of children it supports, once the Government funding expires in June next year.

It would mean a loss of about $350,000 in funding for the charity, which provides support to 700 schools across the country in deciles one to four.

Since 2005, KidsCan has worked to provide food, essential clothing, and basic health and hygiene products to school children in need.

A spokesperson for Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children told Newshub the funding for the charity has always had a time limit and it's due to expire on June 30, 2018.

"No final decisions have been made yet about its future funding," they said.

National Party spokesperson for children Paula Bennett said the Government needed to front up and explain its "terrible" decision to cut the funding.

"They are making a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children," she sad. "In the same week the new Government is talking about passing legislation to monitor child poverty, it is undermining the future of one of New Zealand’s most effective children's charities."

Ms Bennett said KidsCan was "a shining example of how corporate and public funds combined can achieve great outcomes".
