Police have retrieved a body believed to be that of missing helicopter pilot Matthew Timothy Wallis from Lake Wanaka.
The body was pulled from the water at around 10pm on Monday, as well as bits of wreckage from the helicopter.
Mr Wallis' helicopter crashed on Saturday afternoon during a short, solo flight from Wanaka Airport to a lodge north of the township.
"This is the best possible outcome we could have hoped for in the circumstances, and we are glad to be able to bring some degree of closure to Matthew's family at this sad time," Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw said.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission is investigating.
