A Defence Force aircraft had to execute a belly landing at RNZAF Base Ohakea on Tuesday night after its landing gear failed.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force plane, a T-6C Texan II, was conducting basic night flying training when it was forced to undertake a wheels-up landing - also known as a belly landing.

"The two RNZAF personnel on board responded as trained to do, landed safely and evacuated the aircraft with no injuries," a spokesperson said.

RNZAF Rescue fire responders, and local emergency services attended the scene.

The Air Force is investigating the cause of the incident.
