A car has crashed into a retirement home on Rintoul St in Wellington.
Tristan Saunders, the communications manager from Village at the Park retirement home, said the accident was caused by a resident's wife, who was visiting.
"It appears a medical event has occurred and that person has hit the accelerator rather than the brake"
Mr Saunders says that the car went through the building's outer wall, and into the laundry.
"There were no residents involved at all, no one witnessed it but there was a staff member in the laundry that was pinned under some of the wall that had collapsed".
This staff member has now been taken to hospital with moderate to severe injuries, including fractures to her legs and contusions on her face.
The driver of the car is being treated for shock by rest home staff.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 1.25pm on Thursday.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
