A man's body was found on Mangawhai Heads beach, in Northland, at around 11:30am.
According to police, the man had been swimming before he was found unresponsive by members of the public.
Attempts at CPR were unsuccessful, a statement from police says.
His death is not being treated as suspicious and will be referred to the Coroner.
