Business owners fear for property near massive Manurewa blaze

A large fire that engulfed a property in Manurewa has been contained.

Fire and Emergency NZ told Newshub the fire tore through a large building and a car yard on Jellicoe Rd in the south Auckland suburb on Wednesday morning.

It confirmed that the fire is still blazing but is under control, and 17 crews are still at the scene.

St John said no one needed medical treatment.

A nearby business owner told Newshub he was afraid of losing his property to the fire.

"There are only 10 metres between us and the car yard so we're hoping the fire doesn't jump the 10 metre space."

He said he didn't notice the fire until police showed up at the scene.

"We heard voices outside and when we went to see it was police, and a big fire had just started. There was a lot of confusion about what to do."

Ash Scarborough, a member of the public who is near the scene, told Newshub he saw the smoke at around 11:30am.

"We noticed the thick black smoke and the continuous sirens from cop cars driving past towards the scrap yard."

Mr Scarborough said oil drums had exploded in the blaze, and "sounded like gunshots".

Auckland Transport says trains on the southern line have been cancelled between Papakura and Manukau, and advise people to use scheduled buses instead.
