A sinkhole has opened up on a Christchurch street, but it's unclear what caused it.
It's located on Fitzgerald Ave, on the north side of the intersection with Tuam St.
A sinkhole normally forms by erosion caused by recurring exposure to water.
The left-hand, straight lane of Fitzgerald Ave has been closed on both sides of Tuam St, a Christchurch Transport Operations Centre spokesperson said.
Motorists are asked to merge with care as contractors work at the site.
It follows an incident where a truck was consumed by a sinkhole on nearby Peacock St in November, Stuff reported.
