A moving police vehicle was shot at during a pursuit in Auckland on Thursday night.

In a press statement, police say at 11:40pm on Thursday, a police unit signalled for a vehicle to stop on Weymouth Rd, Manurewa. But the driver didn't and a pursuit began. After less than a minute, the driver of the offending vehicle allegedly shot out of a window at the moving police car, police say.

No police staff were injured and the pursuit was immediately abandoned.

The vehicle was found dumped on Totara Rd and police swarmed the area. However, the vehicle's two occupants were not found.

"It is completely unacceptable that our officers, who leave their families to come to work to help keep our communities safe, should be put in this type of situation. We will not tolerate this type of offending and our Detectives will be carrying out a number of enquiries in an effort to identify and locate those responsible," said Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Jill Rogers.

She said it was a frightening incident for officers, but they are doing well and are being supported.

Enquiries are underway at the scene and anyone with information relating to the incident should contact police on 105 or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
