A body recovered from the Waimakariri River north of Christchurch is believed to be that of a teenager who went missing after jumping into the water.
An 18-year-old man was reported missing last Wednesday after he failed to resurface.
Police said in a statement on Tuesday a body had been recovered from the river near Kairaki around 3:30pm on Monday by a member of the public.
"While formal identification is yet to take place, it is believed to be that of an 18-year-old missing in the river since December 22," police said.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
"Police's thoughts and sympathies go out to his family, who have requested privacy at this difficult time," the statement said.
"Police would like to thank everyone who assisted with the search since he went missing."
