Amid the chaos of torrential rain and severe thunderstorms, a van caught alight at a BP petrol station in Auckland.
Video of the incident on Monday morning shows the front of the vehicle completely engulfed in flames before a small explosion caused a cloud of dark smoke to erupt from the bonnet.
The van was parked off to the side at the BP station on Great North Rd, Waterview.
Firefighters were able to put the flames out. Police and traffic management were also at the scene.
"Police will be working with FENZ to establish the cause of the fire, however have no further comment at this early stage," a police spokesperson said.
"Traffic remains heavy in the area and motorists are asked to take an alternative route where possible."
There were more than 4000 lightning strikes in Auckland on Monday morning, NIWA says.
